Fight against underage drinking is never-ending

Alcohol remains the drug of choice among adolescents, used by more young people than tobacco or illicit drugs. Alcohol use by youth under 21 is extremely dangerous and associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as creating health risks. The earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger.

The fight against underage drinking is never-ending, and Arizona must continue to dedicate the necessary resources to remain at the forefront of this effort. Curbing underage drinking requires a comprehensive strategy and cooperation from all levels of government, alcohol manufacturers and retailers, the entertainment industry, parents and other adults.

Since 2004, I have served with fellow Attorneys General as a member of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) Youth Access to Alcohol Committee. This group continues to be a strong voice for policies and best practices to reduce underage drinking.

The Draw the Line campaign is a much-needed effort to raise awareness of the dangers associated with underage drinking and bring together parents, educators, law enforcement, youth and community leaders to share experiences and provide a forum for a community response. I sincerely hope that through these efforts we can provide a supportive environment so our youth can make positive decisions in their lives and reject alcohol. I commend the members of the Governor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families Underage Drinking Committee for your longstanding commitment to this important issue.
